Product details

If you enjoy experimenting with new polymers and colours in your 3D printing adventures, but aren’t eager to learn a whole new set of printing specifications for different types of plastic, eSun’s eSilk PLA Filament is an exciting addition to our filaments that may certainly pique your interest. Designed with the easy-printing base polymer of PLA, and enhanced with polyester-like additives eSun’s eSilk filament offers very cool aesthetics features while still maintaining the great properties that make PLA so easy to print with.

The eSun eSilk Mystic PLA Filament takes a new spin on eSun’s silky range by combining three colours into one roll of filament! This spool is blue, orange, and green in a pretty impressive mashup, taking a whole new approach to how colours get combined into one roll. Instead of simply fusing together interchanging strings of colour like many rainbow filaments, these eSilk Mystic filaments feed all three colours at once, splitting them lengthwise into one continuous stream of multicolour filament. The result is a stunning three colour finish worthy of the “mystic” name. Prints with the eSun eSilk Mystic PLA Filament have an interesting sheen that seems to change colours based on how light falls onto it. Although we offer an entire range of silky filaments, this Mystic PLA Filament results in absolutely beautiful models, accessories and art pieces.

WHAT ARE THE BEST FEATURES OF SILKY PLA FILAMENT?

When talking about Silky PLA, the best features are quite subjective, and will depend on what your favourite factors are. However, the first and obvious amazing feature of Silky PLA is that the prints produced with this filament immediately look a lot nicer than standard PLA prints before any post-processing is done. In addition to this, Silky PLA also offers some unique benefits that many people don’t yet know about, and these include the following three distinct advantages that we’d like to tell you about:

  • Despite looking somewhat soft and fluffy at first glance, Silk PLA actually offers less shrinkage than standard PLA. This is in part because of the polyester contained within the polymer, but is primarily because of the low glass transition temperature, which allows the filament to set for a slightly longer time before hardening into a defined shape.
  • Again, despite the soft aesthetics of Silk PLA, it actually offers better toughness than standard PLA, which is due to the polyester additives providing better layer adhesion, flow capabilities and reduced stringing – resulting in a better overall polymer structure that can be bent, flexes or stretched more than standard PLA before it succumbs to permanent deformation.
  •  Finally, and this doesn’t quite pertain to structural aspects, Silk PLA Filament offers the distinct advantage of maintaining near-perfect colour after printing. And whilst standard PLA often changes colour slightly depending on a variety of factors, from print temperatures to print speeds and even uncontrollable factors during the polymerisation process, the natural glossiness of Silk PLA directly translates through to the printed object, offering almost the exact same colour integrity before and after printing.

Of course, as with any 3D Filaments or other materials from other industries, there are also negative factors for Silk PLA, although the only real noteworthy negative factor is that Silk PLA has a lower temperature resistance than standard PLA. This means that Silk PLA is likely to start sagging and eventually melting when left in hot or sunny environments, although this factor is somewhat negligible since even standard PLA will do the same, but may just a slightly longer time to do so.

TOUGH YET FLEXIBLE

FIL X SBS

Did you know that you are in daily contact with SBS products such as the soles of your shoes or the tyres of your car? But how can SBS be used in FDM 3D printing?

SBS (Styrene-butadiene-styrene) has the unique properties of being both tough and flexible at the same time, thanks to its Polystyrene origin lending it a hard, tough consistency and the Polybutadiene giving it a bit more bounce with its rubbery properties.

This powerhouse combination offers, apart from good layer adhesion, no odour during printing and does not absorb moisture. Furthermore, it has been FDA and EU directive approved for food contact.

Fil X SBS filament is very easy to print with on a glass bed with some hairspray for better bed adhesion and best of all can be smoothed with d-limonene (also available from Fil X!) leaving you with a stunning finished product.

STRENGTH AND HEAT RESISTANCE

FIL X PETG

Fil X PETG offers easy to print quality parts. PETG's popularity is growing as an alternative to PLA when applications is needed where higer flexability and strength is needed. PETG is also more UV resistant than PLA and will not warp as easily as PLA in the heat of the sun.

PETG Is food safe and can be used for applications where in contact with food.

CCTREE PLA filament is the new kid on the block, and is rapidly becoming known as the go-to affordable 3D filament in South Africa, which prints reliably and packs a punch when it comes to quality, smooth print finishes. If you are looking for a daily filament which offers great printing results every time without breaking the bank, then CCTREE Filament is the ideal choice for you.

PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a biodegradable thermoplastic which is derived from renewable organic resources such as sugarcane and corn starch.

This makes PLA Filament a surprisingly eco-friendly plastic to print with when compared to other petrochemical based filament options, and the wide range of colours and additives makes it one of the most versatile ranges too.

PLA is by far the most commonly used 3D Printer Filament in the world, partially due to its above-mentioned environmental friendliness, but mostly because it is extremely easy to use and print with as well. PLA is great for beginners who are just getting started, as it has a low shrinkage factor compared to ABS or Nylon, and due to the composition of the plastics, it doesn’t need an enclosure to print large objects - which would typically be prone to warping or layer separation.

A heated bed is not essential, but if used and set to a temperature of around 40° to 70°C, a heated build surface can go a long way in aiding print quality and bed adhesion. Commonly used Bed Adhesion Aids for PLA filament include Blue Painters tape (masking tape), cheap hairspray, Kapton Tape, PEI and BuildTak. PLA’s glass transition temperature (when it starts getting soft and malleable) is around 50°C, and is extruded at temperatures between 190° and 220°C. However, just remember that printing small or detailed parts will require a part cooling fan for optimal results.
